DIY Pocket Paint Palette

Dried paints in a palette made from a business card case.

Inspired by the Pocket Palette by Art Toolkit, we opted for a do-it-yourself version. If you’re up for a mini project, then read on. If not and are curious about this pocketable palette, then check out the Pocket Palette and its siblings, the Demi Palette and Folio Palette.

Materials:

  • business card holder
  • magnetic adhesive sheet
  • empty metal palette pans
  • white enamel spray paint
  • clear enamel spray paint
  • painter’s tape

Check the internal height measurement of the business card holder against the height of the pans, which need to be the same height as or less than that of the card holder.

Instructions:

Step 1. Measure and cut the magnetic sheet to fit inside of the card holder. Remove the paper backing and press into place.

Step 2. For a large mixing area on the inside of the lid, mask off the area with painter’s tape. Cover all other parts of the card holder that you do not want enamel on with tape or paper.

Step 3. In a well-ventilated area, apply the enamel spray paint and allow to dry according to the directions on the can.

*The metal pans may rust over time. To prevent this, you may want to apply a thin coat of clear enamel on all sides.

Step 4. Place your choice of paint colors into the pans. (You may wish to write the pigment colors on the bottom of each pan for easy identification.) Allow the paints to settle and firm up. This may take a day or two.

Step 5. Once the enamel is completely dry, carefully remove all of the tape. Then, arrange the pans inside on the magnetic side.

There you go. The cost of materials is roughly the cost of one Pocket Palette, but you have enough to make at least two palettes. This little palette is fully functional and lightweight. Pair it with your favorite water brush and sketchpad, and you will be ready to paint your ideas on a whim.
